Spectacular mountain perch overlooking Hendaya Bay with views across to Hondarribia and Irún. Excellent traditional Basque cuisine — the rodaballo and anchovy tortilla are standouts. The quality and setting justify every euro.

The views are fantastic of the bay below and the food is delicious. We had anchovies, roast pepper and fresh-caught grilled turbot, a great lesson in Basque, then apple tart to finish.

An exquisite place, everything top-notch. The flavors are very well done, and Ander's service is excellent.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the txotx, and how is it experienced at Higeralde Sagarlekua?

The txotx is the ritual of natural cider: the kupela (the barrel) is opened and the cider pours out in a fine stream that you catch in your glass, standing up and between courses. At Higeralde we live it during the cider season, with cider made from local apples grown in our own orchards. Outside the season we serve bottled cider all year round.

  • Do I need to book a table?

We recommend booking, especially at weekends and during the txotx season. You can book through the website on the Reservations page or by calling 659 11 61 43.

  • Where is the cider house and how do I get there?

We are at Akartegi 37, 20280 Hondarribia (Gipuzkoa), set in beautiful countryside with views over the Cantabrian Sea. On the homepage you'll find a map with our location and a direct link to open the route in Google Maps.

  • What are Higeralde Sagarlekua's opening hours?

The kitchen opens Wednesday for dinner only (20:00–22:30), Thursday to Saturday for lunch (13:00–15:30) and dinner (20:00–22:30), and Sunday for lunch only (13:00–15:30). We are closed on Monday and Tuesday. We recommend confirming by phone if you're coming outside these hours.

  • Do you make your own cider?

Yes. We have been working in the world of the apple for more than 15 years, with two orchards of local varieties and a collaboration with the Zelaia cider house in Hernani. The apple is the thread that runs through the whole experience, from start to finish.

  • Do you have options for groups or celebrations?

Yes, we host group lunches and dinners. For groups, the best thing is to write to us or call 659 11 61 43 a little in advance so we can arrange the table and the menu according to the season.

  • Is there somewhere to stay near the cider house?

Yes. The Casa Rural Higeralde is just 50 metres from the cider house: the perfect plan to enjoy the txotx and wake up the next morning with views over the valley.
